Middleton Island, Alaska
On Middleton Island, seabirds have taken over abandoned structures. Old military buildings and the wreck of the USS Coldbrooke are now used as nesting sites by kittiwakes, cormorants, and puffins. Human-made materials like concrete and steel have become part of their habitat. These photos document how structures once built for war and work are now home to thriving bird colonies. The birds don’t just adjust to the ruins — they occupy them fully.
