Fall Warbler Identification: Bay-breasted vs. Blackpoll

In the fall, both species lose the distinctive breeding plumage that makes them straightforward to identify in the spring. By fall, both can look like rather plain, olive-yellow warblers with pale wingbars, and lighting, molt, age, sex, and individual variation can make the differences even harder to see.

Fortunately, there are several useful clues mentioned above. The key is not to rely on a single field mark, but to look at the overall combination of plumage colors, leg & feet color and relative contrasts.
