Berry Brainfreeze is a series following the southern invasion of Bohemian waxwings in the winter of 2024.
Some photos capture a rare moment when frost formed on the birds’ faces and feathers as their breath froze—a phenomenon that lasted only about 30 minutes. The rest of the series shows them in their usual antics: feeding on unusually abundant winter berries, fluttering, calling, and joining lively daily feeding frenzies.
Thanks to a warmer-than-usual winter, berries stuck around longer, attracting more waxwings than I’d ever seen. This series is my way of sharing both the fleeting, magical moments and the everyday energy of these remarkable birds.
